چکیده

Highly concentrated NaCl brines are important geothermal fluids; chloride complexation of metals in such brines increases the solubility of minerals and plays a fundamental role in the genesis of hydrothermal ore deposits. There is experimental evidence that the molecular nature of the NaCl–water system changes over the pressure–temperature range of the Earth’s crust. A transition of concentrated NaCl–H2O brines to a @hydrous molten salt@ at high P and T has been argued to stabilize an aqueous fluid phase in the deep crust. In this work, we have done molecular dynamic simulations using classical potentials to determine the nature of concentrated (0.5–16 m) NaCl–water mixtures under ambient (25 uC, 1 bar), hydrothermal (325 uC, 1 kbar) and deep crustal (625 uC, 15 kbar) conditions. We used the well-established SPCE model for water together with the Smith and Dang Lennard-Jones potentials for the ions (J. Chem. Phys., 1994, 100, 3757). With increasing temperature at 1 kbar, the dielectric constant of water decreases to give extensive ion-association and the formation of polyatomic (NanClm) n2m clusters in addition to simple NaCl ion pairs. Large polyatomic (NanClm) n2m clusters resemble what would be expected in a hydrous NaCl melt in which water and NaCl were completely miscible. Although ion association decreases with pressure, temperatures of 625 uC are not enough to overcome pressures of 15 kbar; consequently, there is still enhanced Na–Cl association in brines under deep crustal conditions.

Molecular Simulations of Dense Hydrothermal NaCl-H2O Solutions from Subcritical to Supercritical Conditions

This research has demonstrated that simple structural and potential models can qualitatively and quantitatively predict properties in dense hydrothermal solutions of sodium chloride and water using molecular dynamics simulation. The PTFxi behavior of simulated model systems at 250 bar and 21 wt % NaCl compared favorably to experimental data from ambient to near-critical temperatures as represen...

Molecular simulations of carbon dioxide and water: cation solvation.

Proposed carbon dioxide sequestration scenarios in sedimentary reservoirs require investigation into the interactions between supercritical carbon dioxide, brines, and the mineral phases found in the basin and overlying caprock. Molecular simulations can help to understand the partitioning of metal cations between aqueous solutions and supercritical carbon dioxide where limited experimental dat...

Droplet evaporation: A molecular dynamics investigation

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to model the evaporation of a Lennard–Jones argon nanodroplet into its own vapor for a wide range of ambient temperatures and ambient pressures. The transitions from i high to low Knudsen number evaporation and ii subcritical to supercritical evaporation are observed. At a low ambient pressure of 0.4 MPa, the initial droplet Knudsen number is 1 and the dr...

Simulation of supercritical water and of supercritical aqueous solutions

Molecular dynamics (MD) calculations have been performed to determine equilibrium structure and properties of systems modeling supercritical (SC) water and SC aqueous solutions at two states near the critical point using the simple point charge (SPC) potential model of Berendsen et al. for water. Both thermodynamic and dielectric properties from the simulations for pure water are accurate in co...
